Bio Diversity
Will you Help?

The Greenspace Project is a three year project being funded by the Big Lottery (formerly NOF Transforming Your Space). In Torfaen the Geenspace Project Officer is Veronika Ashton who has provided the following information. Of particular interest at this present time is the opportunity for one or more of our members to be trained as a Biodiversity Champion to identify and record the flora and fauna in the forest with the aim of improving natural habitats.

The Greenspace Project

The main aim of the project is to increase understanding of sustainable development through practical involvement in the following types of activities:

- Creating and improving habitats for biodiversity, including community gardens, wildlife friendly gardening, managing green spaces for wildlife, training in identifying and recording wildlife, collecting and growing seeds

- Improving the local environment, such as improving footpaths and cycleways, lighting, seats, fencing, designing and installing sculptures or other artworks as informed by local residents and groups

- Using resources sustainability, for instance, promoting energy conservation, reducing use of water, encouraging recycling and ‘buying green’

- Developing skills to manage projects, such as, researching the history of an area, planning and managing projects, use of ICT to promote projects, recognising contributions of volunteers

Biodiversity Champions
As part of the project, we will be encouraging local groups and individuals to carry out regular surveys of green spaces to build up a picture of habitats and species throughout the borough. The project may also involve identifying and implementing improvements to sites to encourage a greater range of biodiversity. Initially, this will be focused in south west Cwmbran.
Training and equipment will be provided to interested people and regular activities and events will be held to involve people in the scheme. It is hoped that Cwmbran Community Council will support an award for Biodiversity Champions as part of their existing volunteer awards scheme as recognition of participants efforts.
